While there are many published chronologies for Star Trek out there, I have never been fully satisfied with them. The following viewing order of on-screen material is my preferred ordering of events based on internal references from both on-screen and written material. There are probably mistakes, which I will try to correct when I come across them. In general, my preferred viewing order follows the timeline originally published in the back of the Star Trek: Gateways: What Lay Beyond short story collection, although I have differed somewhat from that timeline in places.

NOTES
1. The viewing order of the episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series follows the production order, not the airdate order.
2. The viewing order of the episodes of Star Trek: The Animated Series follows the order given in Alan Dean Foster’s Star Trek Logs novelizations. I have followed this order because the novelizations provide smooth transitions from one episode to the next.
3. Contrary to most published chronologies, I have placed Star Trek V: The Final Frontier in early 2286 instead of 2287. This placement is based on information from the novel Star Trek: Probe.
4. The viewing order for the first season of Star Trek: The Next Generation follows the production order. If the stardate order is followed, episodes involving Tasha Yar end up later in the chronology than the episode showing her death.
5. If viewing in episode order, “Symbiosis” (TNG) should actually be placed after “Skin of Evil” (TNG). Since Tasha Yar dies in “Skin of Evil” but is still alive in “Symbiosis,” chronologically “Symbiosis” takes place before “Skin of Evil.”
6. Starting with the second season of Star Trek: The Next Generation, stardates follow a more chronological structure from episode to episode. With a few exceptions, all remaining episodes and movies from Star Trek:The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and Star Trek: Voyager are placed in stardate order. Episodes without stardates are placed in production order. Usually, production order and stardate order are the same.
7. The stardate of “Dax” (DS9) places the episode after “If Wishes Were Horses” (DS9), even though the airdate places it much earlier in the season.
8. Technically, “These Are the Voyages…” is the last episode of Star Trek: Enterprise and the events are set in 2161, but the entire episode is a holodeck program playing during “The Pegasus” (TNG).
9. The stardate and production number both place “Second Sight” before “Sanctuary,” but internal references place it during the fourth anniversary of the Battle of Wolf 359 which occurred on Stardate 43990. Thus, the episode should occur on Stardate 47990.
10. The stardate places “A Klingon Challenge” after Star Trek: Generations but the game takes place aboard the Enterprise-D. Thus, the episode should occur on Stardate 48253.3.
11. Although “Homefront” (DS9) and “Paradise Lost” (DS9) aired after “Our Man Bashir” (DS9), the stardate given in “Homefront” places the episodes earlier in 2372.
12. Although the stardate of “Investigations” (VOY) places it before “Lifesigns” (VOY), a minor story arc in “Lifesigns” involving Tom Paris is resolved in “Investigations.”
13. After much deliberation, I have decided to ignore the stardate in Star Trek: First Contact, and have placed it by release date instead. This is based on the reasoning given on Memory Alpha: “The placement of Star Trek: First Contact is somewhat conjectural, based upon trying to reconcile a stardate that would place it towards the very end of the year…with a passing reference to the events of the movie in DS9: “In Purgatory’s Shadow”. As there was no reference to the Klingon-Federation conflict of the 2370s, best estimates would place First Contact after the cease fire enacted in “Apocalypse Rising” but before the reinstatement of the Khitomer Accords in “By Inferno’s Light” and also prior to the events of “Soldiers of the Empire”, as Worf can be seen in First Contact to still be wearing the House of Mogh emblem on his sash and not the House of Martok’s.”
14. The placement of Star Trek: Insurrection is never made clear in the movie. I have placed it after “It’s Only a Paper Moon” (DS9), based on reasoning from Memory Alpha: “The time placement of Star Trek: Insurrection is highly speculative; it is placed roughly concurrent with DS9: “It’s Only a Paper Moon”, since Worf is only in the opening scenes of that episode, which spans quite a bit of time, and doesn’t appear again until the middle scenes of “Field of Fire” (which takes place over three weeks after “Paper Moon”), thus allowing him the time required to make the security upgrades to the Manzar colony and to join the Enterprise-E crew for Insurrection.”
15. Star Trek: Borg takes place 10 years after the Battle of 359.
16. “Homestead” (VOY) is a problematic episode. The episode begins with the Voyager crew celebrating “First Contact Day” (5 April), but the stardate of “Homestead” (and the following episodes) clearly place it late in the year 2377, probably around mid-November. It would be easy to just ignore the stardate and move the episode earlier in the year, except for the fact that this is also the episode where Neelix leaves Voyager. Only two options exist to fix the continuity errors: 1) ignore the fact that the crew is celebrating “First Contact Day,” or 2) ignore the stardates and move the remaining episodes into 2378. Either way, the viewing order remains the same.
17. For purposes of continuity, the Abrams-verse Star Trek movies are placed last in the chronology. The Abrams-verse is an alternate timeline created by Spock and Nero traveling back in time from the year 2387, so the best place to watch them is in 2387 in the Prime Timeline.
18. “Living Witness” (VOY) takes place in the future, around 3074. Production order places the episode in 2374, around the time when the Doctor’s backup holo-matrix was lost.
